Upside Down Jellyfish 11/15/11
Hey Crew!
So recently, I visited the Shedd Aquarium here in Chicago and saw their
amazing Jellies exhibit! Immediately, I decided I wanted to try keeping
jellyfish.
<Cassiopeia...>
After extensive research, I determined that the Upside Down Jellyfish
would be the most suitable jellyfish for captive keeping. The tank that
they would be going into would be a JBJ 28 Gallon Nano Cube CF Quad. It
has four compact fluorescent bulbs for a total of 105 watts of
lighting. Would this be enough lighting?
<Yes>
There will be some macroalgae in the tank as well as in the back of the
tank to help with the biological filtration since there will be no live
rock. Currently, the tank has about 2 inches of crushed coral as a
base, but to get the jellies closer to the lights and to help with
filtration, I am looking to add a lot of live sand (fine sand not
crushed coral) to increase the sand bed to around 5 inches.
I am looking to keep at the most three small upside down jellyfish. I
just want to confirm this, but will phytoplankton, zooplankton, and
newly hatched brine shrimp be good food-wise? Any other recommendations
would be appreciated! Thanks!

<I can't encourage you enough to seek out the latest issue (29)
of UltraMarine Magazine (UK)... There's a very nice, complete,
up-to-date piece on this genus and its captive husbandry; I believe
penned by David Wolfendam. Cheers, Bob Fenner>
