Pond Filtration system... lost prime - 12/13/07 Hi, I just bought a house and inherited a pond, it doesn't have any fish or anything in it. The filtration system in the pond was working when I bought it, but it suddenly stopped working. <... can you describe this filtration system? What stopped "working"?> I got into the pond cleaned out the filter in there, checked the filter next to the pump and cleaned it out, and I also checked to make sure the pump is working. I started the pump after cleaning and the water is not pumping through. I can hear the pump churning but the water is not pumping. I think its an upward filtration system. I was wondering what do I need to do re-start the system, do I have to fill it with water to pressurize the system ? <You may have to prime the intake, pump line... Can be tried in a few ways... jamming a pump hose/hose pipe up an intake line with someone to turn the pump on while you're doing so... filling a pump intake trap... pressurizing a line in a skimmer/box intake... I would NOT leave the pump running without water going through it for any period of time... IF necessary call in a pool or pond company and have them show you how to re-fill the plumbing lines. Bob Fenner> . Thank you Mal Pond check valve 8/29/07 I read your article on check valves. I have one question that I can't seem to be answered anywhere. I have an external pump sitting above the water level by a few feet. I have a pvc check valve, flap style. Not spring. <Mmm...> My question is....... where do you install the check valve? I know, before the pump. But where. BELOW OR ABOVE the water level? <Right above water level for this type of check... to allow some water to press on the flap, make the seal...> Dolphin pumps told me to install it 'just' above the water level. Sequence pumps tell me to install just below the water level. <Both would/will work... but I'd have above... as you may someday have to cut it out... easier to get to...> People in various forums babble on and never answer the question. Can you tell me where to install it and the logic behind it? Thanks, Jake <Yes... have done so... I would also/still place a unioned ball valve on the intake side of the pump in addition... to further prevent water from "sliding back" when the pump is off, the trap or other part of the plumbing opened distal to the check... much easier than fooling with trying to prime the ding dang line... As you will see. Bob Fenner>
