Bothus lunatus

Marine. Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. Eyes sinistral (on the left side). Pelvic fin base longer on the eyed side and anterior on the body to that on the blind side. Pelvic and pectoral fin rays not branched. Pelvic fins lack a spine. Eggs with only a single oil globule (diagnostic character)


Bothus lunatus (Linnaeus 1758), the Plate Fish. Tropical eastern and western Atlantic. To eighteen inches overall length. A master of disguise like many flatfishes. Shown here in  Cozumel and Bonaire against a light and above at title on a dark background. Need fine sand to bury in. Feed on small fishes, crustaceans and octopus in the wild.

Bothus mancus (Broussonet 1782), the Flowery Flounder. To 42 cm. in length. Indo-Pacific; East Africa to Hawai'i, Cocos I. Fiji pix.

Bothus pantherhinus (Ruppell 1830), the Leopard Flounder. Indo-Pacific; Red Sea, all of Indian Ocean to Hawai'i, Marquesas. To 39 cm. Found on sandy, silty bottoms. Males with prominent long pectoral fin on upper side. N. Sulawesi pix of a female and male detail. Second row. Female and male profiles showing the short and long pectoral fins.
