Halomitra pileus (Linnaeus 1758). Dome
shaped colonies, no axial furrow, corallites get larger toward the
edge. Grows to about "helmet size". Fiji 2011 |

Linckia laevigata (Linnaeus 1758), Linckia,
Linckia... Seastar. Blue one in Fiji. Also found in other colors,
brown, tans, violet to burgundy, even mottled... And there are
other species of the genus offered to the trade. This animal is
very (95+ % IME) often doomed from the retailer to aquarists...
having suffered too much damage and neglect in the process of
collection, holding, shipping... Fiji 2011 |

Linckia laevigata (Linnaeus 1758), Linckia,
Linckia... In the wild this is an algae, bacteria, detritus
feeder... that needs space (hundreds of gallons) and mulm (muck,
dirt, call it what you will, on the bottom of its system to
survive. My advice, look to other genera, species of
seastars. Fiji 2011 |

chinopora lamellosa (Esper 1791). /COTW:
Characters: Colonies
are thin laminae arranged in whorls or tiers or, rarely, forming tubes.
Stands over 5 metres across are not unusual. Corallites are relatively
thin walled and small (2.5-4 mm diameter). Columellae are small and
compact, and paliform lobes are well developed.
Colour: Amber,
pale to dark brown or greenish, often with darker brown or green
calices.
Similar
Species: Echinopora
ashmorensis, E.
pacificus and E.
gemmacea.
Habitat: May
be a dominant species in shallow water habitats with flat substrates.
Abundance: Common.
Taxonomic Note: A species complex.
