Canthigaster valentini (Bleeker 1853),
Valentini's Sharpnose Puffer has a filefish
mimic. You have to look close to discern Paraluterus
prionurus even when accidentally shipped mixed in with valentine's
puffer; as a file it has a two-spine dorsal that the puffers lack. This is a
type of Batesian mimicry, with the file suffering less predation by
pretending to be an unpalatable puffer. Bali 2014 |

Centropyge
bicolor (Bloch 1787), the Blue-and-Gold, Pacific Rock Beauty,
Bicolor or Oriole Dwarf Angel (3), is highly variable in it's survivability
in captivity. Some shipments are 100% live on arrival, others can be just
the opposite within days. Better specimens come from other than the
Philippines or Indonesia. To 6" if they live. Bali 2014 |

The only shot I got of an apparent Centropyge eiblii and C.
flavissimus cross while diving down in Nusa Lembongan. Bali 2014 |

Cephalopholis
miniata (Forsskal 1775), the Miniata Grouper, Coral Hind.
Indo-Pacific: Red Sea to the Line Islands. To eighteen inches in length.
Undoubtedly the most prized, frequently used member of the genus for
aquariums. A beauty that is intelligent, and capable of gulping up small
fishes and motile invertebrates. Bali 2014 |
