Shubunkin diagnosis?    3/21/12
Hello,
I would appreciate any help. I read through your site, but would like your opinion from these photos . . . These are snips from a video, which is too large to send.
Right eye popped; raised pink blister like thing on left side; gulps air at top of tank, eating is good but notice she is listing very, very slightly to her left when she swims.
<See all this>
>>> He/she is a 3 yr. old Shubunkin (9 - 10") who shares a 75 gallon tank
<... too small... note the bent pectoral fins...>

 with a (5") Shubunkin.  There is one 400 Emperor BioWheel filter, one 280 Emperor BioWheel filter, an aerator and an Aquaclear 70 flow pump. I give 25% water change every week, and change the filter media every month or so.  Water tests for PH (6.4 - 7.2), nitrite 0, ammonia 0; Nitrates usually are at 20, but last two changes it was at 15.
>>>
>>> For the past several months she has been hanging at the top mostly at night gulping air. I noticed the soft, round, pinkish blister like thing as you can see—which I just noticed she had in August (but much smaller) when I looked at a photo taken at that time, and also her right eye was pop eyed and moving back and forth. She eats and is active except when she hangs at the top. I treated the tank with Mardel's Maracyn Plus last week in December, then again with Maracyn II on Feb. 2nd (carbon was out of filters).  The smaller fish looks fine.>>>
>>> I had added 15 table spoons of Aquarium salt with the water change 1/28 and again with a 60% water change March 4th.
Latest treatment was 1 - 3/4 lb. aquarium salt for three days. Still no change in pop eye or raised blister thing, but the eye looks more popped. Still gulping air at top. Eating is good.
PH 7.2 , ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate is 10 - 15.
thank you so much if you could advise,
Diane
<Mmm, I'd likely do nothing; not add salt to the water... The blister is likely a benign growth (read here re: http://www.wetwebmedia.com/FWSubWebIndex/GFGrowthsF4.htm
and the linked files above. Bob Fenner>

Re: Shubunkin diagnosis?    3/23/12
Thanks Bob so much for your advice and fast response! I checked out the "Goldfish Systems and Maintenance" link which was real helpful and see there are so many more Goldfish links with great and pertinent information . . . I will go through them one by one.  I read about the pop eye and epson salt. It said 3 teas. per 5 gal. but that was for small angel fish. What would be the amount for my 9" Shubunkin and her pop eye? (that measurement includes her tail)
<A teaspoon of Epsom per five gallons of actual water is about right... IF the PopEye is unilateral/one-sided, it is most likely due to a trauma... and will either heal on its own or not>
Regarding her gulping air at top, I really can't get a larger tank than the 75 gal. but I will buy some oxygenating plants like the Elodea for them and also make sure the flow pump is angled correctly and do water change twice a week instead of once.
<Ah, good>
(when the 5" Shubunkin reaches the 10" size, there will be a bigger oxygen problem–I got her to be a friend to the older one, but I guess large goldfish are for ponds and not to be kept in tanks.
<You are correct>
 I hope they will be ok).
Thanks again for your help Bob. Appreciate a quick answer re: the epson salt, if you can.

Lionhead Goldfish Enquiry   3/19/12
Dear CWWM,
I have an orange lionhead goldfish and two white spots have appeared on its wen/cap.  I am not sure it is ill as it is still lively and eating as normal. Please can you advise.
Thanks in advance
Kind regards,
Michelle
<Likely just "wen growth"... put the string "goldfish white spots on wen" in the WWM search tool and read. Bob Fenner>

Black Moor - Carp Pox? - 3/10/12
First I just thought that my goldfish was shedding a scale for some reason.
Maybe it's been a week since I first noticed this loose looking scale and today I found what looks like a sack underneath the scale. I'm worried. I've had this fish for quite a long time and I've never seen this before. I would love some advice, please.
<Actually, this sounds a bit like "carp pox", a usually harmless viral complaint in goldfishes and Koi....  You might want to check ammonia,
nitrite (should be zero ppm) and nitrate (less than 20ppm); ensuring perfect water quality might help this to fade...  Try looking up images here (on WWM) and also via Google searches and see if it looks similar to your Moor's condition.>
Thank You!
<You're welcome!>
Shira
<Warm regards, -Sabrina>
