Entacmaea
quadricolor (Ruppell & Leuckart 1828), the Bubble-Tip
or Bulb-Tentacle Sea Anemone. Family Actiniidae. This is
historically the hardiest of large, naturally symbiotic Clownfish
anemones for aquarium use... many more specimens are collected and
received in tact, in reasonably good health from the wild to
distributors. And more and more folks are offering very hardy
"fragged" individuals that are asexual cloned
aquacultured specimens. Here in the Red Sea. |

The Sling-Jaw Wrasse, Epibulus insidiator
(Pallas, 1770) is showing up more and more in the industry, and is
a real winner looks-wise, though I'll still have to rate it a
moderate score (2) in historical hardiness. Below: Juvenile with
distinctive markings, females are golden yellow over-all, while
males are blackish in the back, pale on the face, with an
orange-brown "coat" on their back. To fourteen inches
total length. Indo-Pacific. Near adult, terminal phase individual
in the Red Sea, 08. |
|
Epinephelus fasciatus (Forsskal 1775), the
Blacktip Grouper. You might think "fasciated" might be a
better common name for this Bass, until seeing how changeable its
coloring is in the wild. Indo-Pacific. to sixteen inches maximum
length. Gulf of Aqaba, Red Sea. |
|
Epinephelus fuscoguttatus (Forsskal 1775),
the Brown-Mottled Grouper. To more than thirty inches in length. A
gentle behemoth that is occasionally "accidentally"
collected for the trade. A shy species for getting so large. Red
Sea. |
