API Fish Medication... Mainly Metro-, Prazi-
8/24/18
Hi Bob,
<Hey Branko>
I've been having issue obtaining Metronidazole and Praziquantel locally. I was
thinking of trying out API General Cure, if manufacturer is to be trusted it
contains nothing but Metro and Prazi and is very effective in treating parasitic
worms on the fish.
<The Prazi/quantel is... might be cheaper if you're using very much to just buy
from a pharma source. I think Hikari sells it in bulk if you have a distributor
locally>
I've found a new supplier which im overall happy with except some of their fish
come with some form of Monogeneans (if im not mistaken).
<VERY common>
Fresh water dip usually takes care of it, however its way too much stress for
some fish and I'd like to avoid losing fish due to that stress.
<Understood>
After reading up on API general cure I've noticed they have wide variety of
other medications in their offer, are they any good? If yes which are worth
looking into?
<All their "older" offerings are efficacious. DO avoid the more modern "herbal"
"fixes"... they're shams>
Other than that I've seen Everything Aquatics advertising
similar medication blends, as well as 100% pure active ingredients. This is my
second choice, simply because I believe it will be easier to clear API's
products on customs. Please advise on what would you use if customs is not
something to worry about.
<My take on all is posted on WWM. Do you have a copy of Ed Noga, Fish Disease,
Diagnosis and Treatment? Either the 1st or 2d edition is highly recommended as
a/the ONE source for reference>
Ps. I have discovered that Centropyge Angels can be easily kept in CU, when
introduced slowly, 0.02ppm per day, and with a chelated CU mix with 16/1 ratio
of CU/citric acid (hope this helps your readers) :)
<Ah yes; I thank you>
Looking forward to your much valued advice.
Ps Happy Birthday! :)
B.
<Ahh, again, appreciated. Bob Fenner>

Hi,
<Bran>
Thank you for swift reply.
<Sure>
Our local pharm company charges 350$ for 25 grams. While in the US 500$ 1kg.
Just ridiculous.
<?! I'd contact Hikari:
http://www.hikariusa.com/wp/solutions/healthaid/prazipro/
Their liquid prep. in one gallon is very useful... and already solubilized
(i.e., in solution)>
Ps please refer to a pictures of Centropyge heraldi which are in attachment.
What could cause that kind of damage? We did fw dip nothing fell off.
<.... can't tell much from a pic. Need sampling, microscopic examination...
Looks like a bacterially infected physically damaged area>
Fish has internal parasites it looks like it ate a whole marble

Gill-worm / flukes 7/20/18
Hello Bob,
<Hey Bran>
We are having an outbreak of what I believe is flukes. (transparent colorless
flatworms falls of fish in FW bath). We have put fish through 10 minute fresh
water dip, and many fell off however problem still occurs and we are losing
fish. We have got Prazi based medicine for gill worms by Sera called Tremazol.
Supposedly medicine is safe for biofilter. Manufacturer advises to do 80% water
change after 6 hour treatment.
<Okay; have you used it?>
Since our system is infested and worms matured, my question is regarding
parasites lifecycle and what would your suggestion be for treatment?
<Per the instructions on the packet>
How long should we keep medicine in the system in order to kill off
parasite/eggs?
<Likely has to be reapplied>
I'm totally clueless about worms since we never had this issue before, FW dip
usually takes care of this on the import.
<Yes... though I'd add a modicum of formalin to your pH adjusted freshwater
dips/baths. Please see WWM re:
http://www.wetwebmedia.com/dips_baths.htm
We have a very strong bio filter, and system is fish only quarantine system, I
assume water change is advised to remove dead worms/flukes in order to avoid
having ammonia issue due to all dead worms.
<IF there is a bunch, a good deal of dead biota/mass, yes>
Which I believe wont be the case in our system due to powerful bio filter.
<Ah, good>
Kind regards,
Branko
<And you, Bob Fenner>
Re: Acclimation & Quarantine; variation of Prazi; use
10/29/15
Dear Bob,
<Bran>
Serbia is terrible when it comes to getting meds for our fish, so, this issue
came up. I was wondering if you could shed some light on the subject :)
I managed to find a drug that containing 50mg of Prazi and 140 mg of
Pyrantel Embonat (*Pyrantel pamoate)*, i failed to find any info on if it's
toxic to fish. Do you have information on safety of this drug for fish?
It's used on cats, dogs, pigs, horses etc... for deworming with a mix with
Prazi.
<I see this on wiki:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyrantel_pamoate>
If it's safe to use what dosage would you recommend?
<I would NOT use this in aquariums, with fishes. As it may be toxic:
https://www.drsfostersmith.com/Rx_Info_Sheets/rx_ivermectin_heartworm.pdf
and has low solubility>
Kind regards,
Branko
<Welcome. Bob Fenner>
Re: Attn: bob-achilles tang. Prazi, Prazi-Pro... and
Praziquantel, all the same 12/2/14
Hey bob,
It's been about 36 hrs since Prazi pro was assessed, and I can see the
white pieces (fluke) have fallen off my my Aussie tusk and durgeon
trigger. However the eye is still cloudy in achilles, I think that just
may be the aftermath or scarring that just needs time to heal.
<Yep>
I see you have recommended praZiquantel to be added on food. Yesterday I
grounded up some Nori, mixed with mysis, pe mysis and spirilla brine
together, and soaked it in some Prazi pro and garlic .
I then saw on reef central not to soak Prazi pro on food. Can it be done
with the Prazi pro, or does it only apply to Praziquantel?
<Yes. Nope. Read the ingredients...>
I thought getting the fish to eat it as well as swim in it could help he
process.
Thanks for all you do my friend
<Welcome>
What's in Fluke Tabs? Hi Chuck! I bought
the Fluke tabs. Do you know what are the active ingredients? It's
not written on the product. Thanks! Dominique <The active
ingredients are Mebendazole and Trichlorfon.-Chuck>
Praziquantel Also Bob, I am wondering if you can help me.
We have some incident of Trematodes in our system. These
worm/fluke is in the fish and when we fresh water dip the fish,
the worm came off from the fish. Some people I talk to say to
treat with Praziquantel or PraziPro from Hikari. Do you have any
info as far as treating the entire system with PraziPro (side
effect, other problems etc). Thank you, Fred <Ah, yes. For
Trematodes, treating their systems as well as fish livestock, 2
to 10 mg Praziquantel/liter (or 7.6 mg/gallon)... the lower does
for Monogeneans will do it, the higher for Digenes. There are
also methods (not applicable here) for injection and oral
administration, baths... Cheers, Bob Fenner>
Re: Praziquantel Thanks Bob, what about PraziPro? Is it
safe? <Yes... is just Praziquantel and a stabilizing agent:
http://www.uskoi.com/prazipro.htm> I know it is a
lot more expensive but no need to dilute. <Agreed> I heard
you need to dilute Praziquantel with Vodka? <Heeee! Can use
this solvent... or not> Also, how can you tell the difference
between Monogeneans and Digenes. Thank you, Fred <Mmm, sorry
for the added confusion. I would not worry re the digenetic
Trematodes... they can/will perish along with the rest or die out
quickly enough due to the lack of intermediate hosts (Di as in
two... two or more other life forms to pass through before
getting to their determinate host (your fishes)...), as opposed
to Monogenes that have a direct life cycle. Bob Fenner>

DTHP Dear Robert, Read your web article about DTHP. Where can I
get this material <Is sold as such, by itself and in concert with
other materials for pet-fish use in various products... mainly labeled
as Masoten, Dylox... see a LFS re if you're looking to treat small
volumes. We can chat if this is for thousands, much more volume.>
and have you heard of it being used against Gyrodactylus? <Yes...
you can see this through a literature search... the most recent work of
Ed Noga, Nelson Herwig... Bob Fenner> Steve
