Anemone ID help? (Pic Attached) 7/26/09
Hi folks,
<Jason>
Love the site, reference it all the time.
I have a question. I picked up some LR from a fellow hobbyist who
had quite a few RBTAs (Entacmaea quadricolor). A friend took the
anemones while I purchased the rock they had been living on. A
few days afterwards, I saw what may have been a "baby
RBTA" pop out of one of the holes in the rock. I've been
feeding it bits of raw shrimp soaked in Selcon and made sure the
rock was positioned in a good spot under my lights. Since then,
another "baby RBTA" popped out of a hole on the other
side of the rock.
... then, I went to the LFS, and saw one of the standard
green/brown Entacmaea quadricolors ... and it looks different
than what I've been nurturing for the past few weeks. Someone
at the store suggested I've been babying an aiptasia
(lol).
<Mmm, not here>
So ... I'm attaching a picture of the larger of my two
anemones, in the hopes that it is in fact a beneficial one, and
not some odd-looking reddish aiptasia that I've been caring.
I'd say he is currently the size of a quarter.
Now, I *have* aiptasia, and combat them with chemicals. ... but
they look different than the anemone I'm attaching. ... BUT
... I've had aiptasia crop up right next to this guy and they
seem to get along, so it surprises me and makes me think maybe
I'm completely bafoonish this whole time. lol
Thanks for the assistance on this one, and sorry about the poor
quality of the photo ... cell-phone camera under full T5 lighting
... it was difficult just to even GET a pic without it becoming a
washed out mess.
The anemone in question looks alil more rosey than the pic, it
kinda' looks whitish here.
Thanks again /> ~Jay
&<This could be a young Entacmaea or Aiptasia... but might be
something else... only time can/will tell what it develops into.
I would leave/keep them for now.

Re: Anemone ID help? (Pic Attached)
7/28/09
Hi Bob, thanks for getting back to me before.
<Welcome>
A follow up: I was given a link to this site:
http://www.tailoredaquatics.com/index.html?a=0&d=47
The pair of anemone I have in my tank look strikingly similar (if
not identical) to the two large pictures on this page for an
anti-Aiptasia product. That is really what is fueling my
"these must be bad" thoughts
about my anemone pals. They look BIG for Aiptasia though, and a
fellow local reefer suggests they're Majano (also talked
about on that site), which in that case, are also bad?
Thoughts?
<Also posted. See here:
http://wetwebmedia.com/marine/inverts/cnidaria/anthozoa/aiptasia/aiptasia.htm
and the linked files above>
Man ... I enjoy the variety of critters we can get for our home
reef systems .. but the fact that there are just SO MANY
varieties of everything makes my head spin sometimes.

Better, as previously stated, to just wait at this juncture, see
what these Actinarians develop into (if anything)... Is this
clear? Bob Fenner>

Anemone, What Is It 6/21/09
Hi I have 3 small clear Anemones. I have not been able to ID
them. Attached is a pic of them. Could you let me know what they
might be. Are the Bad or good Anemones?
<Appears to be a species of Glass Anemone, not desirable. See
re here.

Thanks

Bob,
Geez, I just got new glasses less than a year ago. Was comparing
pic to pics on WWM and it sure looked like a species of glass
anemone to me.
Sorry.

Re: Anemone ID 5/5/09
Greetings James
<Hello Jeremy>
I am doing up a website and have 8 friends who are skilled Marine Life
photographers.
http://splashingtime.com
I've been trying to figure out the species for awhile now. How are
you familiar with all the species? Are you a marine biologist
or...?
<No, but have been keeping marine animals for 35+ years and do
reference the web and books for info. Much if not all of what you seek
can be found on our web site.
An example would be here.
http://www.wetwebmedia.com/marine/inverts/cnidaria/anthozoa/anemones.htm
An index to our library can be found here.

Thanks so much for your help.

Anemone Identification Likely a Long Tentacle Anemone
(Macrodactyla doreensis) 4/28/2009
<H>ey,
<Hello>
<I> bought this "anemone" last week and <I>
wanted to know what kind it is.
<It is an anemone>
<I> was told by the LFS that its was a long tentacle
anemone.
<It appears to be a LTA>
I posted some pics on another forum and someone had said it
looked like it was a plate coral,.
<Not even close>
but another member of the forum said he didn<'>t know
what it was but it didn<'>t look like a anemone.
<They were wrong>
<H>e ask<ed> if the base of the anemone was reddish.
<I> told him it was and took a pic for him to see.
<H>e then said that he was pretty sure it was an anemone.
<I> just wanted to ask <yo>u guys what <yo>u
think it is.
<I>t looks very much like a long tentacle plate coral.
<T>ell me what <yo>u think.
<T>h<ank -x>s
<It is a Long Tentacled Anemone (Macrodactyla doreensis) You
can read about their proper care here:
http://www.wetwebmedia.com/macrodoreensis.htm As well as the
linked pages at the top Do realize that LTAs do not like living
on rocks, but rather in sand\mud.
Also, in future correspondence, please use proper grammar rather
than
"netspeak".>

I've looked and looked but cant seem to find this
hitchhiker, please help. Pest anemone -- 04/12/09
Hey professional marine identifiers.
<Are you paying us?>
I picked up some live rock from my local store and got a
(welcomed/unwelcomed?) surprise. I believe it is an anemone of
some sort but I can't find a picture of one that looks like
it.
<One is...>
It is very small, about 1/4 inch around and maybe equally as
tall. It moved to a crest on the rock and hasn't moved since
and I haven't seen any other pop up. I have included the pics
the first one is a top view of it and in the second picture it is
to the left of the button polyp
<Yes... a Zoanthid>
which is in the forefront of the photo. I'd like to know what
it is and should I remove it or not.
<Is either an Anemonia or... please read here:

Magnifica or crispa? -- 04/12/09
Hi,
<Hello>
I need your help again :)
can you help me telling if this anemone is a Heteractis magnifica
or a Heteractis crispa?
<Yes... the latter, though badly bleached>
it was sold as a Heteractis magnifica, but the anemone was white
with blue tip... but now it getting some brown on it
<A good sign... likely re-incorporating endosymbiotic
Zooxanthellae>
could it be that the anemone was bleach?
<Yes, this is so>
thanks again for your help!
