Genus Macrocystis:
Macrocystis pyrifera, (Giant) Brown Kelp.
Perhaps the largest, fastest growing organism on the planet. Up to
two hundred or so feet long, up to two feet more a day. Here
off the Coast of California in San Diego. Sometimes shown in Public
Aquariums as a replica, occasionally as the real thing. |

Rolled-Blade Algae, tropical West Atlantic. 4-6 inches. Here in

aquariums. This is Padina jamaicensis in Belize. |

Genus Pelagophycus:
Pelagophycus porra (LĂ©man)
Setchell 1908; Elk (horn) Kelp. This large (up to more than 90' long) Brown
Algae is found along the W. N. Am. coast; Pt. Conception to San Benito
Island, Baja. Here a juv. form is attached along the wreck Yukon off San
Diego in about a hundred foot depths. Thus far it's comprised of a small
pneumatocyst (air filled bladder), a securing holdfast (not shown) and two
blades/lamina. 2016. |

species in this genus are attached as here, and others
free-floating. |

Sargassum fluitans. Sargassum
seaweed, Gulf Weed. This is one of the principal algae that makes
up the Sargasso Sea in the Atlantic. Has long, serrated fronds with
distinctive white mid-rib, smooth spherical gas bladders. Here in

Distinctive white central areas on green to brown thalli. Common in
the tropical West Atlantic. 4-16 inches in height. Bahamas
