Help Identifying this macroalgae 10/17/19
Hi,
<Hi Holly>
I have this macroalgae taking over a couple of rocks in my tank. It's
starting to spread to a third rock now as well. It's pretty, but I'm getting
concerned it's going to be a nuisance and damage corals.
So far, nothing in the tank eats it (I thought perhaps my emerald crab or
Halloween urchin would, but no). The tank is a 32g biocube, so I can't put a
Rabbitfish or tang in it. Can you help me identify it and give me ideas on
controlling it? It may be Fauchea laciniata, but I'm not sure.
<It appears to be some type of red macro algae, probably Halymeda
floridiana; not harmful but needs nitrates to survive, you might want to
test for NO3.>
It's very short and individual little leaves are attached by a single point
to the rock. I'm including some pictures from when it started and current,
First picture is from 9/12 and second picture is from one month later,
10/12.
Interesting observation, so far, it's only growing on the man made Real Reef
rock, and not on the natural live rock in the tank (so far anyway).
<It looks it prefers the smooth surface of your "man made rock." If you
notice it starts to spread beyond control, you can manually trim it.>
Holly LaClair-Bogedain
<Cheers. Wil>

ID 5/14/19
Hi Crew!
<Dani>
Been a while since I’ve messaged you all, hope all is well. I was wondering if
you could ID this red growth all over the corners in this tank?
<What a beautiful Rhodophyte. Perhaps a member of the genus Fauchea>
I volunteer for an aquarium and the curator says it’s a type of macro algae.
Thank you in advance, I appreciate your time!
Dani

Please ID this
2/9/19
These mushroom looking growths came on the live rock after a neglected time to
as far as lighting was concerned. I purchased the rocks abt 13yrs ago...they
came out when I just had a FOWLR saltwater tank...right now they are in a new
tank with an AI Prime HD lighting...wondering what they are and their ideal
lighting requirements. Thxs for your time
<This, these appear to be some sort of Rhodophyte, red algae... are they brittle
to the touch?
Do review what we have re such on WWM:

Red tipped macro algae ID 8/2/18
Hi Crew!
<Dani>
Got another macro today...the local fish store was honest and wasn’t sure
exactly what it was. It just came in labeled as “red macro algae”—how obvious,
lol. I thought maybe Gracilaria but never seen a pic of one that’s green with
red tips. Definitely not dragon’s breath, as I cultivate that one. Could you be
so kind to ID? I very much appreciate your help as always!
Dani
<Will look tomorrow. For now, take a read through our Rhodophyte ID FAQs files:

Re: Red tipped macro algae ID 8/2/18
So many beautiful algae in those FAQs! Some have such gorgeous specimens! Yet
none as two toned as mine.
<Ah yes; but/though, like tomatoes, I do suspect this is a Red/Rhodophyte... but
what?>
It’s also extremely tough. I tried to rip a piece off to put in my microfuge, I
couldn’t—had to cut it!
<Interesting>
I thought perhaps Gracilaria, but I heard that’s usually fragile.
<Yes; agreed; though I recall there are more than two hundred known species in
the genus. Am going to post on WWM and the Net and let's see if folks can/will
chime in re. Some sort of Fauchea species thus far seems the consensus. BobF>
Dani.
