colonies • corallites ceroid (walls touching) • corallites 5-10mm diameter •
deeply immersed • septo-costae join at the top of the wall and may form a
granule
Genus Gardinoseris Scheer and Pillai 1974 (Dana 1846): Monotypic. /WA
Coral; submassive, encrusting colonies • corallites ceroid • acute ridges
between corallites • fine and even septa • similar to Pavona

Gardinoseris planulata (Dana 1846). Massive
to encrusting. Corallites separated by high walls, columellae
present, septa-costae fine, even. Red Sea, East Africa to
Hawai'i, Polynesia and tropical east Pacific coast. Nuka Hiva,
Marquesas, Polynesia pix. |

Genus Leptoseris Edwards & Haime 1849. /WA Coral: encrusting or
plates often growing in shaded areas • widely spaced corallites that may be
inclined to the margin • corallites can cluster within pockets (raised rounded
walls) • similar to Pavona.
Found in both the Atlantic and
Indo-Pacific (rest of genera found in Indo-Pacific only). Colonies
either laminar (blade like) or encrusting. Frequently have striations
on fronds.
