Acanthurus triostegus (Linnaeus
1758), (manini) Convict Tang or Manini (Hawaiian). One of the best
Acanthurus for use in reef tanks for its size, easy going temperament and
habit of consuming fine, filamentous algae. Reserved for native Hawaiian use
in Hawai'i, but available from elsewhere. An adult down in Cabo San
Lucas, Mexico. |

Anisotremus taeniatus Gill 1861, the Panamic
Porkfish, is found in the southernmost part of the Sea of Cortez
(Gulf of California to you oldsters) south to Ecuador. It is very
similar (sympatric?) to the Atlantic Porkfish, A.
virginicus Linnaeus. Adults are colored with gorgeous
iridescent blue stripes on a golden yellow background with two
black bars one oblique over the eye, the other vertically from
the start of the dorsal fin to the start of the pectoral. To

Lutjanus viridis (Valenciennes 1846), the
Blue and Gold Snapper. Eastern Pacific; Mexico to Ecuador. To one
foot in length. In Baja and the Galapagos. Five black lined
bluish bars on body. Cabo 2016 |

Stegastes rectifraenum (Gill 1862), the Cortez Gregory. A bright
blue beauty of the Sea of Cortez, twixt Mexico's Baja and Pacific shore
as a juvenile... whose metallic luster breaks up and becomes dull to
dark brown as an adult. To three and a half inches in length. Juv. in
